The importance of play and good food cannot be underestimated in the making of a happy and healthy pet!
It was from my experience of working as a newly graduated veterinarian at a local animal shelter that I fully appreciated the importance that good quality pet food and environmental enrichment has on the quality of an animal’s life.
Sadly, the majority of the dogs and cats at the shelter were malnourished. The effect of underfeeding and in many cases, the effects of being fed poor quality pet food was shocking. There is a reason why cheap pet food is so inexpensive … because they usually contain unhealthy cheap bulk-fillers and protein sources which are often indigestible to our pets! “You are what you eat” is a saying that we’ve all heard and there is definitely a whole lot of truth behind it.
I was also disheartened to see that most of the animals at the shelter didn’t know how to play. They were obviously raised in an environment devoid of toys and any form of environmental enrichment. As a veterinarian, with a special interest in ethology, I cannot overemphasize the importance of play in all pets of all ages. The act of playing for animals is, in reality, no different than playing in humans. It provides a good mental break, relief from stress and also allows for a good physical workout. It is vital for the physical, emotional and mental well-being of every creature on this planet. Without this outlet, many pets start to show behavioural problems which range from destructive tendencies to anxiety and attention-seeking behaviour. Considering this, it is not surprising that the number one reason for euthanasia or abandonment in pets worldwide is due to behavioural problems.
Our Mission
Our mission is therefore to encourage the health and well-being of all pets, not just those fortunate enough to have loving homes but also those that are homeless. At Vet Hyper we strive to sell only good products that will keep your pet happy and healthy. We want all our customers to have peace of mind in knowing that anything that you buy from us will be good for your pet. After all, if we wouldn’t use the product for our own pets, we wouldn’t dream of selling them to you!

The Owner
The Owner Dr. Leandri Klopper graduated from Onderstepoort in 2019, and after the successful completion of her Compulsory Community Service year in Stellenbosch she has worked as a small animal veterinarian in Pretoria. She gained valuable experience in running her own practice in the West Rand for the past two years, after which she scaled down to start a family. Dr. Leandri and her husband, Conrad Cloete, co-own Vet hyper and took over ownership of Vet Hyper (Pty) Ltd in 2023. Their passion for animal care as well as the human-animal bond is what drives them to promote high-quality pet nutrition as well as pet accessories.
